Sausage Stylus: Testing Meat for the iPhone

After reading this article about the 40% increase in sausage sales in South Korea because people are using them as styluses for their iPhones so they don’t have to take off their gloves in the cold weather, our mission was clear. We immediately headed to the closest bodega and purchased a variety of processed meat products to test out this innovation.

Original Slim Jim: By a wide margin the Original Slim Jim was the most comfortable meat stylus to wield. With its narrow diameter and pleasant heft, it had the feel of a Montblanc. Sadly, it was woefully lacking in the performance department—though functional, a great deal of pressure had to be applied to the touchscreen to effect action.

Hot & Spicy Slim Jim: This was eaten before testing could be performed.

Oberto Beef Jerky Stick: Definitely the best tasting of the meat styluses we tested, but sadly was completely non-functional with the touchscreen.

Fire Cracker Giant Red Hot Pickled Sausage: With it’s girth, using this sausage stylus is a bit like using the giant crayons they used to give you back in kindergarten. That said, this was far and away the best pseudo finger in the group. There were a few issues with the girth/accuracy dilemma, but if you have fat fingers this will be hardly noticeable.

In the weeks ahead we’ll be rubbing other meats on the screen of our iPhone to determine their feasibility as cold weather styluses. And you can see the Korean sausage craze in action here.
