The Shea faithful have more reason to be giddy than they have had in a long, long time. So long in fact, that Shea faithful is the most appropriate moniker for the bleacher-dwelling denizens of Bailout Field. And Thursday night in Flushing, owing to a two-hour rain delay and an impending-sweep euphoria that even thunder claps and pouring rain could not dampen, fans proceeded to eat the complex out of house and home.

The Shake Shack-theme park behind center field filled with soggy fans, who stuck it out for the eventual 9:05 p.m. watching highlight reels from the 1969 and ’73 seasons on the Diamond Vision (including one very surreal image of Tom Seaver shaking hands with Richard Nixon).

And up in steerage, the so-called “Promenade” deck where tickets can be had for the pittance of $25 bucks, the stadium throws the masses a bone, sort of literally in the form of a second Blue Smoke behind home plate (with another in the aforementioned theme park behind Center Field). This is also where Brooklyn Pilsner, easily the best beer to be had in the stadium, is available on tap. The specialty of the casa, though, is pulled pork. And by 7th inning the only smoked meat left in the park was the Phillies players. Blue Smoke reported that it was all out of pork, and Big Pelf dominated to such an extent that we predict that he will become the first Met to toss a no-hitter.

The sweep of the Phillies in which the Mets staff did not allow a run was the first such sweep by the Amazins in more than 40 years (the ’69 world champs were the last to do it). Who can blame the Mets fans for celebrating their run? In the last week their team has made the Yankees and Phillies look as hapless as those rivals have a tendency to make the Mets look. So they left their stadium delirious, singing, chanting, jeering Philly fans, and quite full of pork.

The Mets announcers need to refuse to do any more White Castle Pork Sliders promo spots while they still have some dignity left. They are forced to say repeatedly “Get your oink on.” Now it’s a tight game. Mets and Braves tied after 10. And … “Get your oink on.” It’s just not right. A dramatic Reyes stolen base and … “get your oink on.” Please have some self respect. The Wendy’s Threeconomics spots are poetic by comparison. Bad enough the Mets would take money to plug a pork product from White Castle, which is just about enough to turn anyone’s stomach, but the slogan just adds insult to injury.

But no matter what, the commercial is actually worse.

If you get on the ridiculously snaking line at Citi Field’s Shake Shack expect to miss a good three to four innings of on-field action. There are no screens broadcasting the game there, and no sight lines to the field, though you are technically in the stadium. The line makes the one in Madison Square Park look like a drive-through window at a Roy Rogers in Bethlehem, Pennsyvania. If this $6 burger is good enough to warrant spending half the game away from $180-a-seat tickets that actually offer a view of the action, please let us know. This past inaugural-weekend Saturday there were still folks lined up in front of the Shake Shack as much as half an hour after the strike-em-out-throw-em-out double play that ended the game. At least they weren’t missing anything.

What did we tell you? Once Shea is meets the wrecking ball it’s going to be champagne and Kobe beef dogs for Mets faithful. Maybe not exactly Kobe, but grade-D shredded beef patties padded with cardboard fiber filling are going the way of neon silhouettes and purple walls. Good-bye Bubba Burger; hello Pat LaFrieda. A just announced deal by the New York Mets and vendor Aramark with Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group will bring a Shake Shack to the new ball park (though you’ll likely have to get on line in the top of the third to to have any hope of getting food by the seventh-inning stretch). Double header burgers. Six types of dogs. Also a Blue Smoke, too. Now that the Mets are winning they deserve Kansas City ribs and pulled pork. In addition a Meyer-run taqueria and Belgian frites stand are planned. So it might not be the greatest burgers and barbecue to ever hit New York, but it sure beats the monstrosities currently thrust on those who go through all the trouble of trekking out to Willets Point.

As the Mets begin their first homestand with new manager Jerry Manual, Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop, home of the Sandwich No. 9 and top-tongue purveyor, has continued its ripped-from-the-headlines sandwich board tradition by publicly offering Willie Randolph a job: “Hey Willie, we could always use a good counterman.” Okay, so it’s scrawled in dry-erase marker in front of the shop, but a job’s a job. Of course it’s become well known that Manual has some knife skills, but if Willie is as good at slicing deli meats as this guy, he’ll be a welcome addition to the crew.

The ever-dwindling options for hot dogs at Shea Stadium shouldn’t be much cause for concern. Once that purple eye sore is relegated to the trash heap it so deserves one can only imagine that fans in the primo seats will be treated to Kobe beef dogs served on silver platters by butlers in blue and orange. However, in the meantime we’re left with Nathan’s (which bumped Kahn’s when the Cyclones came to Coney Island) or Glatt Kosher (only available at the far right-field food court, which spruced up the house that Kranepool built after the ’86 championship). We had the misfortune to sample a Glatt Kosher dog recently, and if the crazed Hasids who make these tube steaks answer to a higher power it’s one who’s never eaten a decent dog. This thing was soggy and overly thick, like a roll of SPAM wrapped in baloney. This is what the food court, once the crown jewel of Shea’s culinary offerings, has been reduced to: Bad Kosher and a Dunkin’ Donuts. Bring on the wrecking ball; if only to end this wiener abomination.
